Checkered Sleeve Tumbler Bag Crochet Pattern
This tumbler sleeve is worked from the bottom up. It is meant to fit most 40oz tumblers with a handle. You can choose to use it just as a slip cover to your tumbler or add the straps and connectors to turn it into a carrying bag.
You are always welcome to crochet your straps and skip the hardware additions, but if you want them, I will link them in the materials section.
Cotton Yarn highly encouraged due to the way it absorbs moisture if tumbler sweats during use.

Yarn
I Love This Cotton: 100% cotton, size 4, in 2 colors, approx 85 yds each (roughly half a skein).
Substitute Yarns
-Lily’s sugar and cream cotton,
-dishes cotton
-any weight 4 cotton
Hook
US 7 (4.5mm) or size needed to obtain gauge
Materials
- Yarn needle
- scissors
- Swivel Claps Hooks (optional)
- Beads for ties (optional)
- Strap (optional)
Gauge and Sizing
16 stitches and 11.5 rows equal to 4″in all half double crochet. I don’t think gauge has to be perfect for this pattern to work. Being 1 stitch or ½ row off is fine.
One Size – Fits most 40oz tumblers with a handle. I have tested this on Hydrojug 40oz, Stanley 40oz, and an amazon 40oz dupe.

Checkered Sleeve Tumbler Bag Crochet Pattern

Bottom – Creating a circle for the bottom base of the sleeve. Working with yarn color A for the entire bottom.
Round 1 : start with a magic circle (or a ch 4 and slst to the first ch.) Ch 1, make 8 sc in the magic circle. Slst to the first sc of the round. —8 sts.
Round 2 : Ch 1, (not included as a st here and throughout), 2 sc in each st around. Slst to the first sc of the round.—16 sts.
Round 3 : Ch 1, 1 sc in first st, 2sc in the next st. *1 sc, 2sc in same st* repeat around until you reach the first st. Slst into first sc of the round. — 24 sts.
Round 4 : Ch 1, 2 sc in first st, 1 sc in the next 2 st. *2 sc in the same st, 1sc in the next 2 sts* repeat around until you reach the first st. Slst into first sc of the round. — 32 sts.
Round 5 : Ch 1, 1 sc in first 3 st, 2sc in the 4th st. *2 sc in the next st, 1 sc in the next 3 sts* repeat around until you reach the first st. Slst into first sc of the round. — 40 sts.
Body – Continuing to work in the round. Turn at the end of each round. We are now building the walls of the sleeve.
Row 1 (RS): Ch 1 (not included as a st here and throughout), blosc in each st around. Slst to the first st of the round— 40 sts.
Row 2 (WS): Ch 1 and turn, hdc in the next 4 sts. Tie on with color B and hdc in the next 4 sts. Carry the yarn from the other color along as you stitch. Repeat *4 hdc in color A then 4 hdc in color B around*. Slst to first hdc of round. —40 sts.
Row 3: Ch 1 and turn. Still using color B, hdc in the next 4 sts. Hdc Color A in next 4 sts. Repeat *4 hdc in color B then 4 hdc in color A around*. Slst to first hdc of round. —40 sts.
Row 4: Ch 1 and turn. Still using color A, hdc in the next 4 sts. Hdc Color B in next 4 sts. Repeat *4 hdc in color A then 4 hdc in color B around*. Slst to first hdc of round. —40 sts
Row 5: Ch 1 and turn. Switch to color A and hdc in the first 4 stitch. Alternate colors every 4 sts around. —40 sts
Row 6: Ch 1 and turn. Still using color B, hdc in the next 4 sts. Alternate colors every 4 sts around. —40 sts
Row 7: Ch 1 and turn. Still using color A, hdc in the next 4 sts. Alternate colors every 4 sts around. —40 sts
Rows 8-13: Repeat the previous checkered pattern we have established. 4 sts wide and 3 rows tall, then switch then alternate to the opposite checkered pattern. You should have 4 sections of the checkered pattern established at this point. —40 sts
Now we will create the split for the handle.

Split for Handle – We will no longer sl st at the end of each round. Instead you will ch1 and turn.
Row 14 : With Color A, Ch 1 and turn. Hdc in the next 4 sts. Alternate colors every 4 sts. At the end of the round DO NOT sl st to the st from the beggining of the row. —40 sts.
Round 15-28 : Ch 1 and turn. Repeat the same established checkered pattern. Remember at the end of each row, ch1 and turn. —40 sts.

Border of checkered pattern
Border : With Color A, Ch 1 and sc evenly down the edge of the checkered pattern towards the split in row 13. (Refer to graphic to see which the direction to st. Starting at the black dot). Once you hit the split begin to sc back up the other side.
Once you get back to the top row, do 3 SC in the first hdc from the previous row (refer to blue dot in graphic). Sc in each st around. End with 3 sc in the last st (the black dot in the graphic), then sl st to the first st of the sc border. Tie off and weave in ends.
Ties – Adding four ties to secure sleeve to water bottle
Tie on where the black dot is in the graphic. Ch 40. Tie off. This is were I added the optional beads at the end of the ch.
Tie on where the blue dot is in the graphic. Ch 40. Tie off. This is were I added the optional beads at the end of the ch.
About half way down the split, repeat the steps above creating 2 more ties (refer to the green dots on the graphic).

***If you want to use this pattern simply as a cute cover for you cup, stop now. To turn it into a carrying bag go to the next step.***
Strap Tabs – This is where I added the D ring clasps.
The Tabs and clasps are optional. You can just create a simple crochet strap by making a ch as long as your desired strap length plus 16 ch sts (the additional sts are to help with attaching the straps later), sc in each stitch and ch 1 and turning at the end of the row. Make the strap as many rows wide as you desire. Then follow along with the pattern where I attach the strap tabs and attach your straps using the same method.
*You need TWO tabs*
Row 1 : (I like to switch to a smaller hook (3.5mm) here to keep sts tight but its okay to continue using the 4.5mm hook as well) With Color A, Ch 20 and turn. Sc in the 2nd ch from hook and each ch across. – 19 sts.
Row 2: Ch1 and turn. Sc in each st across. – 19 sts.
Row 3 – 4: Repeat row 2. Tie off after row 4.
Repeat all steps again for second tab.
Slide your clasp onto the tab and fold the tab in half. Slide the tab over the edge of the sleeve with one half on the outside of the sleeve and one on the inside. Make sure to place it on the 3rd checker over from the tie (refer to photo).

**If not using hardware and want to directly attach your strap, fold the end of your strap onto itself at 8 sts in from either end. Place the folded end where it is marked on the photo and follow the directions below for sewing.**
Using your yarn needle, sew through all three layers (tab, sleeve, other half of tab) in an X and then a square around the bottom of the tab as pictured. This ensures a secure attachment for your strap.
Strap: Attach your purchased strap to the clasps and you are done!
Optional Crocheted Short Handle
- Ch 46.
- Turn. Sl st in the first 8 chs.
- Sc in the next 30 chs.
- Sl st in the last 8 chs.
- Turn.
- Skip the 8 sl sts. Sc in the first sc from the previous row.
- Sc across the next 29 sts. (30 sc total)
- Fasten off, leaving a long tail.
- Fold the 8-slip-stitch section at each end back toward the handle to form a loop.
- Secure the loops. Use the starting tail for one end and the finishing tail for the other, sewing each end firmly to the handle.
Finished handle: Loop → 30 sc handle → Loop
Project complete!
